TRAM Flap – Transverse Rectus Abdominus Myocutaneos Flap

The Transverse Rectus Abdominus Myocutaneos Flap uses the Rectus Muscle and an island of skin from the lower belly. This is a portion of the abdomen that normally is removed during a tummy tuck. This technique allows for breast reconstruction with only the patient’s own tissue, without the need for an implant. The TRAM flap is a reliable technique that has been around for a number of years, but does have it’s drawbacks. This technique requires the need to sacrifice one or both of the abdominal muscles, permanently weakening the abdominal wall and potentially increasing the risk of formation of a bulge or hernia in the area. This technique is still a viable and useful technique when other options are not available. Restoration of the nipple and areola follow. Scars fade substantially with time.
